MASSIVE NEW RECORDS 2018

Seit ich im Jahr 2000 meine erste Homepage online gestellt habe (damals noch mit freundlicher Genehmigung meines damaligen Providers lion.cc, der Pleite gegangenen Buch- und Internetsparte von Libro) hat sich nicht nur die Welt weitergedreht, sondern auch zahllose Platten und CDs, die seither den Weg in meine Plattenschränke bzw. CD-Regale gefunden haben.

Auch wenn ich gerne über alle Tonträger schreiben würde (und mir fällt zu jeder Scheibe mitunter sehr viel ein!) ist das aus Zeitgründen leider nicht möglich. Deshalb beschränke ich mich weitgehend auf Raritäten, Kurioses und zu Unrecht längst Vergessenes. (Bewertungsnoten von 1-10; 1: Sondermüll, 10: neue Maßstäbe setzendes bzw. genrebildendes Meisterwerk)

Grundsätzlich soll dieser Blog dazu dienen, all das musikalische (teilweise natürlich auch unnütze) Wissen, dass sich im Zuge von über 30 Jahren Plattensammeln angesammelt hat, mit allen Interessierten zu teilen. Andererseits dient es mir persönlich auch als eine Art Tagebuch, in dem ich etwa nachlesen kann, wann ich auf einem Schlag über 90 Reggae-Singles Made in Jamaica von einer älteren Frau am Flohmarkt zu einem unschlagbaren Preis erworben habe (Flohmarkt Neubaugasse Wien, 14.05.2004) oder zuletzt Massive Attack live gesehen habe (Wien, Gasometer, 2.11.2009). Weiters ist es beim Durchlesen von alten Rezensionen auch spannend zu sehen, wie sich Geschmack, Gesichtspunkte etc. über die Jahre verändert haben bzw. immer wieder zeitgenössische Verweise auf einstige Medienereignisse, Politik etc. auftauchen.

Bei passender Aktualität (z.B. Fußball-WM, Geburtstage etc.) werden ausgewählte Beispiele speziell präsentiert.

Ebenfalls nachzulesen (noch lange nicht alles!) sind hier meine Kritiken, Konzertberichte und Interviews für die leider mittlerweile entschlafenen bzw. im Nirwana des Internets gelandeten Onlinemagazinen noize.cc und musicchannel.cc.

Anläßlich der WM in Russland:

Die österreichischen Sportreporter - Grüss' Euch, wir sind aus Öst'reich (1978, Single) (Gekauft 30.10.2004, Rezension aus 2004)




"Meine Damen und Herren, es ist mir eine große Ehre, ihnen präsentieren zu dürfen: Die österreichischen Sportreporter"

So beginnt, unterlegt von einem fast discotauglichen Beat und letztlich in einer unglaublichen Melange aus Uptempo-Reggae und Dixieland mündend, die wohl erstaunlichste Single, mit der die Qualifikation der Österreichischen Nationalmannschaft für die WM 1978 in Argentinien gewürdigt wurde. Als Gratulanten agierte die damalige Creme de la Creme der ORF-Sportreporter, allen voran der legendäre Edi "I werd narrisch" Finger, Peter "Pepi, loß mi eini" Elstner, Robert Seeger, Gerhard Zimmer oder Erich Weiß, der für die eingangs erwähnten, einleitenden Worte sorgte.

Während man nach der im Titel verborgenen Standortbestimmung sich in der ersten Strophe darauf beschränkt, potentielle Gegner der Klasse des späteren Weltmeisters Argentinien über „Lieblingsfeind“ Deutschland bis hin zur Mongolei aufzuzählen wird in Strophe 2 kurzfristig zumindest akustisch der Wunschtraum eines jeden österreichischen Fußballfans wahr: Edi Finger moderiert hier in seiner unnachahmlichen Art ein fiktives WM-Finale zwischen Österreich und einem ungenannten Gegner, bei dem „Schoko“ Schachner das spielentscheidende Tor zum 3:2 schießt, womit gleichzeitig das allseits bekannte „Cordoba“-Ergebnis vorweggenommen wird.

Im Gegensatz zu heute hatte die österreichische Nationalmannschaft der WM 1978 dank überragender Spieler wie Friedl Koncillia, Bruno Pezzey, Herbert Prohaska oder natürlich Hans Krankl tatsächlich das Potential für die Teilnahme am Endspiel. Ob das auch für jene Mannschaft gilt, die Österreich bei der Heim-EM 2008 vertreten wird, ist leider mehr als fraglich. Zumindest könnte man dann die als Veranstalterland ermöglichte erstmalige Teilnahme an einer EM musikalisch eingehend zelebrieren. So könnte etwa Christina Stürmer und Toni Polster gemeinsam die EM-Hymne intonieren oder vielleicht gar das berüchtigte Sportreporter-Duo Adi & Edi a.k.a Adi Niederkorn und Edi Finger Jr. nach Vorbild der ORF-Kommentator-Meisterklasse von 1978 ins Tonstudio gelotst werden. Man darf in jedem Fall gespannt sein ...

Mc Goozer & Tony Hadley, Szene Wien, 22.02.2018

When you go to a 80s/90s themed concert and you have no clue about the support act that is billed as "MC Goozer" you most probably would think that this is some kind of MC Hammer. The guy walking on stage then actually was the complete opposite: No Rap with Rick James-Samples just a singer/songwriter, his guitar, great catchy songs and a cover of A-ha's "Take On Me". McGoozer what is the actual alias of Paul McGee sure blew the mind of those who think Ed Sheeran as a great musician. As a side note, Paul has quite some talent in his family: His brother Brian was a member of the Simple Minds and his other brother Owen had a hitsingle back in 1986 with My Favourite Waste Of Time. While this song didn’t stand the test of time it or at least widely is forgotten it is completely different with „True“ or „Gold“ By Spandau Ballet.

As every 80s-party would be incomplete without those classics so it was inevitable that the band got together again in 2009 after they originally split in 1990 to benefit from that wave nostalgica. However since last year leadsinger Tony Hadley and the remaing members again go separate ways what Hadley enabled to relaunch his solo carreer which finally brought him to Vienna.

Tickets for his gig did not just appear for me as a perfect Valentine's gift and most likely each presentee might have reacted like my wife: “Thank you so much for the ticket! But.. ehm... who is this?” This is no big surprise as Tony Hadley isn't a really household name in this area but as soon as you mention he was the leadsinger of Spandau Ballet the joy was infinite.

But would it be the same if Hadley wouldn't be allowed to use the Spandau Ballet back catalogue out of legal reasons etc.? It sure might be bit disappointing not to hear “True” etc. but definately highly entertaining as he proved this evening. Backed by a great band his vocal talents worked perfectly on cover versions of David Bowie (“Life On Mars”), Queen (“Somebody To Love”) or the Stereophonics (“Dakota”). As there are luckily no restrictions to his repertoire the audience could enjoy SP-classics like “Only When You Leave”, “To Cut A Long Story Short”, “Round And Round”, “I'll Fly For You” or “Through The Barricades” where he duetted with percussionist Lili Gonzalez

Not surprisingly  “True” and “Gold” were served as encores but the best was yet to come: First at all I had to chance to talk to McGozzer and get his album signed. The cream of the crop  however was to get the cover of "True" getting autographed by Tony Hadley and even got a picture with him. Now that's what I call a great concert night!
